Kaoma, Western Province – More than 800 adults in Kaoma District have returned to school through the government’s Youth and Adult Literacy Education (YALE) programme, which is being implemented under the free education policy.

Kaoma District Education Standards Officer for Open and Distance Learning, Ellen Ngombo, revealed that 882 adult learners from 50 centres across the district are currently enrolled in the programme. The learners, comprising both men and women, are acquiring literacy and numeracy skills as well as practical life skills such as agriculture, carpentry and tailoring.

Speaking during the commemoration of International Literacy Day at Kaoma Trades Training Institute, Ms Ngombo praised the learners for their commitment to education despite their age and encouraged them to inspire others to take advantage of the programme.

The event was held under the theme, “Literacy for People, Planet and Prosperity.”

Ms Ngombo said the programme has transformed the lives of many participants by equipping them with essential skills that enable them to improve their livelihoods.

“Today we have seen adult learners who can read, write and perform basic calculations. We have also seen learners who can use information and communication technology, keep business records and create products using the skills they have acquired,” she said.

“You are living proof that literacy changes lives, and we are proud of your achievements. Currently, 50 centres in the district are offering this programme, with 622 women and 260 men enrolled.”

Kaoma District Commissioner Kashina Sheba reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding access to literacy and skills development opportunities for individuals who missed out on formal education earlier in life.

Ms Sheba encouraged the learners to further their education by enrolling at Kaoma Trades Training Institute and the Youth Resource Centre, adding that government bursaries are available through the enhanced Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

“The main purpose of this event is to promote basic and functional literacy among young people and adult learners. I am impressed by what I have seen and heard from our learners today,” she said.

“You can also apply for CDF bursaries and continue developing your skills through training programmes offered at Kaoma Trades Training Institute and the Youth Resource Centre.”

Among the beneficiaries of the programme is 28-year-old Abigail Mulenga, a Grade Seven learner at Chilombo Primary School, who expressed gratitude to the government for providing her with a second chance at education.

Ms Mulenga said she is determined to complete her studies and build a better future for herself.

Another learner, Muhau Muleyabai from Mahilo Primary School, also commended the government for introducing the programme, noting that it has significantly improved her reading, writing and communication skills.

She added that the knowledge she has gained has helped her manage her business more effectively and confidently.

The YALE programme continues to provide a pathway for adults and youths who missed formal schooling, empowering them with literacy, numeracy and practical skills needed to improve their socio-economic well-being.
