Over 800 adults in Kaoma District of Western Province have been enrolled in schools under the Youth and Adult Literacy Education (YALE) programme through the government’s free education policy.

Kaoma District Education Standards Officer for Open and Distance Learning, Ellen Ngombo, disclosed that currently 882 Men and Women from fifty centers across the district, are learning how to read, write, and calculate as well as life skills such as agriculture, carpentry and sewing among others.

Ms Ngombo expressed confidence and happiness in the adult learners for their dedication to education despite their ages and implored them to encourage others to also join the programme and use it as an opportunity to improve their livelihood.

She was speaking during the commemoration of the International Literacy Day held at Kaoma Trades under the theme ‘Literacy for people, planet and prosperity’.

“Today we have seen adult learners who can now read, write and calculate. We have seen learners who can use ICT, keep business records and make products from the skills they have learnt.

“You are the true testament that literacy changes lives, we are proud of you. Fifty centers or schools in the district are offering this programme and currently 622 Women and 263 Men learning,” she said.

Kaoma District Commissioner, Kashina Sheba, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting literacy and life skills to individuals who may have missed their early education.

She encouraged the learners to also enroll at Kaoma Trades Institute and Youth Resource Center and apply for government bursaries through the enhanced Constituency Development Fund for advanced skills training.

 “The main aim of this event is to promote basic and functional literacy among youths and adult learners. I’m really happy with what I’ve seen and heard from our learners. You can also apply for the CDF bursaries and continue with your skills of training at Kaoma District or Youths resource center,” Ms Sheba noted.

28 -year -old Abigail Mulenga, who is a grade seven learner at Chilombo Primary School, thanked government for the opportunity and expressed commitment to completing her education.

Muhau Muleyabai from Mahilo Primary School also thanked the government, stating that the programme has greatly improved her literacy levels and writing skills.

 She added that she is also able now to run her business smoothly using the knowledge she has gained from school.
