National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu were yesterday forced to walk to a campaign rally in Chambishi after police allegedly attempted to block them from accessing the venue.

According to accounts of the incident, supporters resisted the police action and escorted the two leaders on foot to the rally venue while chanting slogans calling for change. The confrontation unfolded as the NRPUP duo sought to address supporters gathered for the campaign event.

Addressing the rally in Chambishi, and later a similar gathering in Mufulira, Mundubile promised to restore freedoms if elected, telling the crowd that Zambians had lived without peace and basic rights for the past five years.

“Firstly, I want to thank all of you. We know we are late because of Honourable Kambwili. The police tried to block us, but we were walking on foot. But do not worry, their time is up, all the lies they made in five years have been exposed,” Mundubile told supporters.

He said his team’s first priority upon taking office would be to work on restoring citizens’ rights. “You have stayed for five years without peace and rights. You have stayed like slaves because of the same laws that our friends introduced. So, the first thing we will do is bring back your rights. We want to bring back your freedom of expression, movement and freedom of worship,” he said.

Turning to the mining sector, Mundubile cautioned mining companies against involving themselves in Zambian politics, accusing certain mining houses of funding the ruling party to influence the outcome of the election.

“We have mining houses today that want to control the country’s democracy. There is one company, a mining house, that wants to select leadership. It is getting money and then paying the UPND. In return, the UPND are buying councillors and controlling democracy. Are you going to allow that? We want to send a very clear message to mining houses, come to Zambia, invest and stay away from politics. We will not sit idle and watch you fund politics, you want to change the democracy of this country. We are sending a warning to mining house. We will not sit idle and watch you alter the rights of our people,” he said.

Mundubile alleged that a specific mining house had been given favour by the Minister of Mines, saying it had saved almost one billion dollars out of an original obligation of nearly one billion dollars that Zambian leaders owed. He said this was part of a wider pattern of concessions extended to favoured investors at the expense of ordinary citizens.

“There is a certain mining house which was given favour by the Minister of Mines; we would debate in Parliament. It saved almost one billion dollars out of… it’s because of that one billion dollars that our leaders are going there,” said Mundubile.

He said the message he wanted to send to mining houses and their investors was straightforward. “This is where we see some candidates are given K20 million to withdraw. What is causing that is the money they have received from that mining house. It is giving them money so that they buy democracy. We will not accept that, we are independent,” he said.

Mundubile drew a broader link between mining sector concessions and the affordability crisis facing ordinary Zambians, arguing that reduced mineral wealth tax rates had come at the direct expense of citizens’ purchasing power.

“So, our friends, our investors, come into the country and work on what you are supposed to work for. Do not get involved in the issue of changing government. Your leaders failed to work for the people. In the past, they gave you tax waivers; they reduced mineral wealth tax from six percent to three percent. Because of that, you saved almost one billion dollars over the past three years. Now you are employing that money to try and destabilise the people’s choices. We will not accept that. It’s a warning to our friends, investors, come into the country and work on what you are supposed to work for. Do not get involved in the issue of changing government,” he said.

“It’s a warning to our friends to stay away from Zambian politics,” Mundubile added.

The rally in Chambishi and the subsequent event in Mufulira formed part of Mundubile’s continued campaign push across the Copperbelt, a province where mining sector policy and campaign financing allegations have increasingly featured in political messaging ahead of  August general election.
