NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has vowed that he will declare his assets annually if he wins the August 13 general election, promising a government built on transparent procurement systems open to all Zambians.

Mundubile made the pledge while featured on 5FM Zambia on Thursday. He said his administration would also refrain from persecuting any leader currently serving in the UPND government, framing his campaign around national renewal rather than retribution.

“What we want, we want to reset the country,” Mundubile said. “We want national renewal, we want a country to get back on its rails, we want Zambia as a country to work again.”

He said the cycle of political score-settling needed to end. “It must stop somewhere, it will end somewhere. This is an undertaking that I make. I will not persecute any of these leaders that are in government today.”

The opposition leader reflected on the personal cost of his campaign, saying he had been unable to travel freely or use his phone for four months. Despite this, he said he was prepared to move past those grievances.

“Yes, I have been convinced, I haven’t been able to travel the past four months, I haven’t had my phone for the past four months, but we want to put all that under the bridge,” he said. “And be able to run a country that will foster unity and love.”

Mr Mundubile said his candidacy was not driven by personal or family interest, despite the sacrifices involved for himself and his household.

“If you look at where we have been and where we’ve come from, our fight is not for me and my 22 siblings, for me and my five children, it’s for the Zambian people,” he said. “We have put our heads on the chopping board for the Zambian people.”

He said his campaign would not retreat regardless of the outcome. “We are ready with whatever comes, we will not sit back and cow down, to say in case we lost he [President Hakainde Hichilema] is going to do that, we are ready for all that. But what we are fighting for now is the freedom of the Zambian people. We want to liberate the Zambian people socially and economically.”

Turning to his anti-corruption plans, the NRPUP leader said his government’s contracts would be transparent and that all dealings would be conducted above board.

“When you look at some of the ways to fight this corruption, especially in government, in our manifesto, we are going to come up with a digitally enabled government so that most of these procurement systems will be digitalized,” he said. “We are trying to eliminate the corrupted elements as it were.”

He said digitising government procurement systems would help close off avenues for interference by officials seeking to manipulate contracts for personal gain.

“By ensuring that our government systems are digitally enabled, this will further eliminate interference from certain government officials,” Mundubile said.

The presidential hopeful then drew a direct contrast between his proposed approach and that of the current administration, committing to make his own conduct in office fully accountable from the outset.

“My government will be very strict,” he said. “As opposed to President Hakainde Hichilema, when I win, I will move into the State House. My dealings will be above board. I will declare my assets from the first day and every year, thereafter, because we will have nothing to hide.”

He said the standard would not apply to him alone. Mundubile said he expected his ministers and members of parliament to follow the same example, warning that unexplained wealth among his appointees would trigger consequences.

“By setting up that example, I expect the ministers and members of parliament to follow suit,” he said. “If my ministers suddenly acquire wealth which they cannot explain, that will cause me to act. So, we are going to fight corruption in earnest as it were.”

Asked what message he would share with Jesus Christ if he were to meet him during the campaign trail, Mundubile said he would ask for forgiveness on behalf of those he believes have caused hardship for ordinary Zambians.

“I will talk about Jesus,” he said. “I would pray that Jesus should forgive our brothers that have put many other citizens in turmoil, persecution and oppression. I would ask on their behalf that the Lord Jesus forgives.”

The NRPUP leader’s remarks come as scrutiny intensifies around his own public record, with the Southern African Network Against Corruption separately pressing him this week to account for road contracts worth more than K1.5 billion awarded to companies in which he allegedly holds an interest.

Mundubile’s asset declaration promise now sits alongside that unresolved question as voters weigh competing claims of accountability ahead of polling day.
