Mufulira District Commissioner, Evaristo Chilumba, revealed that the project is being implemented using the disaster component of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
Mr Chilumba stated that drilling of the borehole has already been completed, adding that pipe works, installation of the tank and solar panels are expected to be completed within one week.
He stated that the sanitation situation at the premises was an impending sanitary crisis, with a risk of an outbreak of waterborne diseases such as Cholera during the rainy season.
“The premises provide services to large numbers of people daily through national registration offices, the Ministry of Agriculture, the local and magistrate courts, and other government departments,” he said.
Mr Chilumba explained that the long standing water shortage left both visiting members of the public and staff with extremely limited sanitation services.
He further announced that government will also renovate the ablution block that was previously closed due to lack of water and subsequently converted into makeshift storerooms.
Department of Agriculture Senior Agricultural Officer, Belinda Sichamba, noted that officers and clients seeking services from the various government departments had long endured poor sanitation due to the lack of water.
“The installation of the borehole is going to improve the working conditions for the civil servants based at the district administration offices.
“As the Ministry of Agriculture, we service a lot of farmers, the National Registration Department as well as the Cooperatives Department also service a lot of community members who all need to use rooms of convenience,” she added.
Ms Sichamba has since noted that the installation of the borehole will enhance service delivery to the public.
