Construction of the new 278 table capacity modern market in Mbala district in Northern Province has reached an advanced stage, with works standing at 80 percent completion.

The project, valued at K6.5 million, is being financed under the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) and is expected to ease the shortage of trading space at the existing location market.

Mbala District Commissioner Jestus Sikazwe confirmed the progress, noting that once completed, the facility will provide a more organised and spacious environment for traders and customers alike.

“This development will cushion the shortage of space at the location market and give traders a dignified place to conduct business. The modern market will improve hygiene, order, and management standards, which are critical for the growth of Mbala’s trading sector,” Mr Sikazwe said.

Mr Sikazwe said the development of the Mbulu market will not only improve business operations but also enhance hygiene and management standards in the district’s trading sector.

He added that the modern market is part of the government’s broader efforts to expand infrastructure and support local economic activities through CDF funded projects.

“Government remains committed to ensuring that CDF projects deliver tangible benefits to communities, and Mbulu Market is a clear example of that commitment,” Mr Sikazwe emphasised.

He added that the government remains committed to ensuring that CDF projects deliver tangible benefits to communities, saying Mbulu market is a clear example of that commitment.

Meanwhile, Local traders have welcomed the development, saying it will transform their working conditions.

Getrude Mujimba expressed gratitude to the government for the project.

“We used to trade under the sun, and during the rainy season it was even worse. We are so grateful to the government for constructing this market,” Ms Mujimba said.

Another trader, Grace Nachilima, echoed similar sentiments.

“This market will give us proper shelter and space to conduct our business. It is a great relief for us,” Ms Nachilima said.
