Eastern Province Sports Development Officer, Rhoda Goma, has hailed the inaugural Lusangazi District Chova Cycling Competition as a major milestone in promoting grassroots sport and identifying cycling talent in the district.

Speaking at the inaugural event in Lusangazi on Saturday, Ms Goma said the competition reflects government’s commitment to increasing sports participation in line with the 2023 National Sports Policy, which seeks to promote mass participation and strengthen partnerships aimed at improving sporting performance.

“The rationale of the National Sports Policy is to improve grassroots participation in various sporting activities, thereby promoting mass participation and creating physically fit and healthy communities,” she said.

Ms Goma noted that the policy is aligned with regional and international frameworks and addresses emerging issues such as integrity in sport, adaptive sports, high performance sport, sports tourism and the creation of safe sporting spaces.

She added that the Lusangazi District Chova Cycling Competition is a direct beneficiary of the Community Sports Programme, which the government devolved to local authorities in 2021 to increase opportunities for communities to participate in sport regardless of age, gender, religion or political affiliation.

Ms Goma congratulated the Lusangazi District Sports Advisory Committee for successfully organising the district’s first cycling competition and encouraged organisers to continue using sport as a tool for promoting healthy lifestyles and community development.

Meanwhile, cyclists have been urged to continue training ahead of the forthcoming provincial cycling competition in Chipata, where participants will compete over a distance of 52 kilometres.

Speaking during the prize-giving ceremony, Lusangazi Town Council Secretary Tembo Sekani, said selection of cyclists to represent Lusangazi had not yet been finalised and encouraged all participants to remain committed to training.

“Today’s event covered approximately 40 kilometres, while the race in Chipata will be 52 kilometres. That means you must continue training and improving your endurance,” Mr Sekani said.

He said selection would not necessarily be limited to those who finished in the top positions, adding that, depending on available resources, more cyclists could be considered to represent the district.

The inaugural competition attracted about 10 cyclists who raced over a distance of approximately 40 kilometres, with Moses Lungu of Sichilima Village in Chikowa Ward emerging as the overall winner.

Speaking after the race, Mr Lungu said he entered the competition to test his ability and challenge himself against other cyclists.

“I decided to participate because I wanted to challenge myself and prove that I could complete the race. I was determined to give it my best and compete with the other cyclists,” he said, thanking the organisers for successfully staging the competition.

“I would like to thank the organisers for putting together this competition. It has given cyclists an opportunity to showcase their talent, and I hope more of such competitions will continue to be held in the future,” he said.

The Lusangazi District Chova Cycling Competition is expected to become an annual event aimed at identifying talented cyclists to represent the district at provincial and national competitions, while promoting community participation in sport.
