Government has reaffirmed its commitment to modernising agricultural extension services through digital innovation with the rollout of the Mulimi360 e-extension Platform.

Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary for Technical Services John Mulogoti says the initiative is aimed at improving access to timely and reliable information for farmers across the country.

Speaking during the provincial rollout and sensitisation meeting on the Mulimi360 e-Extension Platform held at Urban Hotel in Kasama yesterday, Mr Mulongoti says the initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening and modernising agricultural extension service delivery.

Mr Mulongoti said the platform demonstrates the government’s commitment to embracing innovation and digital transformation to enhance climate resilience, food and nutrition security, job creation and sustainable socio-economic growth.

He said the development of the platform was made possible through the support of cooperating partners, including the European Union, which financed the Sustainable Intensification of Smallholder Farming Systems in Zambia project.

“The development of Mulimi360 demonstrates the power of partnership in advancing national development priorities,” he said.

He noted that government policy through the Comprehensive Agricultural Transformation Support Programme (CATSP) and the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP) priorities increased agricultural production and productivity by creating an enabling environment that attracts private sector investment.

Mr Mulongoti said the interventions are already bearing fruit with Zambia projected to record a bumper maize harvest of more than five million metric tonnes during the current farming season.

He further disclosed that President Hakainde Hichilema has tasked the Ministry of Agriculture with achieving annual production targets of 10 million metric tonnes of maize, three million metric tonnes of soyabeans, one million metric tonnes of wheat and one million metric tonnes of sugar by 2031.

“The Ministry stands ready to actualise these targets through close collaboration with all stakeholders, leveraging innovation, digital transformation and private sector participation,” he said.

Mr Mulongoti emphasised that digital technologies have become a strategic necessity in improving service delivery and strengthening climate resilience, adding that conventional extension services alone are no longer sufficient to meet the growing needs of farmers.

He explained that the Mulimi360 Platform consists of a web portal, mobile application and the e-Mulangizi chatbot, which together provide integrated agricultural advisory services, early warning and climate information, market intelligence, geospatial data management and digital knowledge repositories.

He said the platform will enable farmers to access timely, accurate and reliable information to support informed decision-making and improve agricultural productivity.

Mr Mulongoti urged the Ministry of Agriculture staff at all levels to take ownership of the platform and ensure that accurate and quality information is consistently uploaded to maximise its effectiveness.

He further called on all departments within the Ministry to work together in supporting the integrated digital platform, describing agricultural development as a multidisciplinary undertaking that requires collaboration.

Mr Mulongoti expressed confidence that the successful implementation of Mulimi360 will contribute significantly to increased agricultural productivity, climate resilience, food security and sustainable agriculture.

Meanwhile, Northern Province Agricultural Coordinator Aswel Lubungo observed that agricultural extension services remain an essential link between research, policy, markets and farmers.

Mr Lubungo said the provision of electronic extension services presents an opportunity to make agricultural information easily accessible, relevant and timely for farmers across the province.

He noted that the development of the Mulimi360 platform marks a significant step towards improving communication among farmers, agricultural extension officers and the Ministry of Agriculture.

And National Project Coordinator for Mulimi360 e-Extension platform, Geoffrey Siulembe said the project is intended to improve agricultural productivity by strengthening access to agricultural extension services and information.

Dr Siulembe said the digital platform will ensure that farmers receive accurate and timely information to support informed decision making and enhance production.

And one of the participants, Kisha Mulenga welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that will benefit farmers.

Ms Mulenga said the project will enable farmers to easily access information on agriculture including best farming practices and other extension services.

She added that improved access to agricultural information will help farmers increase productivity in various districts and contribute to agricultural development in Northern Province.

The Mulimi360 e-Extension Platform is expected to strengthen communication between farmers and extension officers while enhancing the delivery of agricultural advisory services through the use of digital technology.
