The National Disaster Risk Management Division, formerly known as the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), has distributed assorted food relief items to households that were affected by floods in Mweninkasi area in Isoka District during the 2025/2026 rainy season.

The affected families had their houses and crops damaged by floods.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, Acting Isoka District Commissioner, Kenneth Mwantalasha said government has responded to the plight of the affected families after floods destroyed crops and damaged homes, leaving many households in need of assistance.

Mr Mwantalasha said the consignment includes mealie meal, cooking oil, sugar, salt, beans, soya chunks and kapenta.

“Following the assessment that was conducted, government through the NDRMD mobilised relief food for the affected households. This assistance is meant to help families whose livelihoods were affected by the floods,” Mr Mwantalasha said.

He has further reiterated government’s commitment to responding to disaster situations and ensuring that affected communities receive humanitarian assistance.

Meanwhile, Sub Chief Mweninkasi, Liaison Simukoko, has thanked government for responding to the needs of affected households in his chiefdom.

The traditional leader said people in his chiefdom lost crops and property due to floods.

“Our people lost crops and some property due to the floods. We are grateful that government has not abandoned us and has come to the aid of the affected families during this difficult period,” he said.

And Dainess Nakaona, a beneficiary, expressed gratitude to government through NDRMD and other stakeholders for the support.

Ms Nakaona said the assistance will help families recover from the effects of the floods.

“We had exhausted our food after the floods destroyed our fields. This assistance has given us hope, and we sincerely thank government and everyone who contributed to helping us,” Ms Nakaona said.

Another beneficiary, Rodwell Simukoko, said residents initially thought the assessment conducted in the area would not result in any assistance.

“When the team came to assess the damage, some of us thought it would end there. We were surprised when we were informed that relief had been approved, and today we have received it. We are thankful to government for fulfilling its promise,” Mr Simukoko said.

The food distribution forms part of government’s disaster response programme aimed at assisting households affected by floods and other natural disasters across the country.
