Government has commissioned a new market shelter in Luyanti Ward of Kaoma District in Western Province, aimed at providing safe, secure and dignified trading space for local entrepreneurs, with a special focus on women and youth.

Speaking during the event, Kaoma District Commissioner, Kashina Sheba, said the facility was constructed in response to the district’s growing demand for modern market infrastructure as commerce and economic activity expand.

“The facility we are commissioning  has been constructed to respond to this growing demand by providing adequate trading space for our hard working entrepreneurs,” she said.

 Mrs Sheba described the market shelter as a safe, secure and conducive environment for conducting business and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering local entrepreneurs, particularly women and young people, who form the backbone of the local economy.

She revealed that government seeks to increase access to markets for local producers and traders, promoting entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for business growth.

The District Commissioner said through the market shelter, government supports skills development and economic empowerment initiatives, and contributes to the overall economic growth and sustainable development of the district.

She disclosed that the market shelter was constructed at a cost of K671, 000 using the Constituency Development Fund – CDF.

Ms Sheba further urged the community to take collective responsibility to maintain the infrastructure so that it continues to serve both present and future generations.

Speaking earlier, Development Committee Chairman, Ohlas Wina, indicated that marketeers had for years been appealing to previous governments to construct a market shelter but to no avail, until the UPND administration under President Hichilema came into power.

Mr Wina added that traders were previously operating from makeshift grass-thatched structures, but can now trade from a modern facility.

A trader, Lucy Mutelo, thanked government for the gesture, saying marketeers had been suffering selling in the sun after their makeshift market was blown off by winds.

Another trader, Charity Simasiku, said the new shelter will improve livelihoods as traders will now be selling in a conducive environment, unlike the crowded makeshift market they previously used.

The project is part of the government’s broader agenda under President Hakainde Hichilema to promote rural development, economic empowerment, and improved service delivery through CDF-funded projects.
