Lusaka based Economist Kelvin Chisanga says the launch of public consultations on the 2027-2031 Medium-Term Revenue Strategy (MTRS) is an important intervention to tap into different aspects of the country’s resource envelope.

Highlighting the importance of the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy, Mr Chisanga indicated its vitality in the case of how Zambia has been able to shape up in respect to the national budget implementation process.

He acknowledged the key fundamental aspect in the MTRS as a deliberate policy measure which is looking at how best to grow the country in meeting up the revenue capacity in line with trying to put up a proper framework for growth.

Mr Chisanga was speaking in an interview with to the media ahead of the launch of public consultations on the 2027-2031 Medium-Term Revenue Strategy tomorrow, carrying the theme’ mobilising domestic resources for sustainable growth and national development.

He explained that Zambia should be able to look forward to financing some of its projects in the domestic market, from the market participation point.

“The aspect of contracting more from the domestic market and interplaying more with tax structure is more sustainable to develop this country,” Mr Chisanga added.

He further observed that with external markets, the country is paying high interest rates and also suffering from different economic effects such as forex market erosion, among others.

Meanwhile, Mr Chisanga charged that the budget for Medium-Term Revenue capacity and the national budget should be in tandem with issues of tax relief incentives and policy reforms.

He said the meeting is therefore timely, saying it presents a platform for stakeholders to share ideas and see how Zambia’s economy can grow, based on implementation.

And reacting to President Hakainde Hichilema’s announcement yesterday that Zambia will move from economic stability to growth, Mr Chisanga said the growing Zambia agenda demands economic transformation that needs to be cultivated.

He noted that this requires the need to make full use of the country’s potential by interplaying with specific sectors, important to the formulation of the economy.

“The next stage as we have led the stabilisation foundation, is to look at best interventions to the specific industry, the requirements and elements,” he said.
