The Zambian Government has declared five days of national mourning following the death of former Vice President Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott, a development that comes as political parties intensify campaigns ahead of the August 13, 2026 General Elections.
Government announced that the period of national mourning will run for five days, during which flags will fly at half-mast and official mourning arrangements will be observed in honour of the former Vice President, who served under late President Michael Sata.
The declaration temporarily shifts national attention from what had become an increasingly heated election campaign, with political parties traversing the country seeking support ahead of next month’s polls.
Dr. Scott occupies a unique place in Zambia’s political history. Following President Michael Sata’s death in October 2014, he became Zambia’s Acting President, making history as the first white African to serve as Head of State in a sub-Saharan African country in the modern democratic era. He later handed over power following the 2015 presidential election.
Throughout his political career, Dr. Scott was widely recognised for his outspoken nature, intellect and contribution to Zambia’s democratic development. Before serving as Vice President, he held several Cabinet portfolios and represented Lusaka Central in Parliament.
The declaration of national mourning also draws comparisons with the country’s previous election cycle.
In June 2021, just weeks before the general elections, Zambia lost its founding President, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda. His death prompted a 21-day period of national mourning, leading to the temporary suspension of political campaigns before election activities later resumed.
The passing of Dr. Kaunda became one of the defining national moments of the 2021 election period as political parties paused campaigns to allow the country to mourn its founding leader.
Similarly, Dr. Scott’s death now comes at a crucial stage of the 2026 election campaign, when presidential candidates and parliamentary hopefuls have been holding rallies across the country ahead of polling day.
It remains to be seen how the declaration of national mourning will affect scheduled political activities during the five-day period.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across Zambia’s political divide, with leaders describing Dr. Scott as a distinguished public servant whose contribution to governance and national development will be remembered for generations.
His death marks the end of a remarkable political career that spanned several decades and crossed different administrations, leaving behind a significant chapter in Zambia’s political history.
