We’ll take measures to prevent disputes from resulting in militia groups – Haimbe

MINISTER of Foreign Affairs Mulambo Haimbe has told the United Nations General Assembly -UNGA 81 that the UPND government will take measures to ensure that political differences are addressed through due process of the law to curtail the emergence of militia groups.

Haimbe says Zambia recently concluded the August 14 general elections through which citizens exercised their constitutional right to choose their leaders.

He says the UPND government is thankful to the people of Zambia for participating in the democratic process, through which the Electoral Commission of Zambia declared President Hakainde Hichilema the winner of the August 13 polls.

“We also express our sincere appreciation to the international election observation mission for their invaluable support and contribution to Zambia’s democratic process,” Haimbe told the Assembly.

He further told the Assembly that Zambia remains a peaceful, stable and sovereign nation.

“And the peaceful atmosphere that characterised the country before, during and after the elections is a clear reflection of our people’s enduring commitment to democracy, national unity and constitutional governance,” Haimbe said.
