63 ViewsLUSAKA, July 14, 2026 – The Lusaka City Council (LCC) says rehabilitation works on Twin Palm Road are progressing well as part of the city’s 40.1-kilometre Road Rehabilitation Programme aimed at improving traffic flow and modernising Lusaka’s road network.
According to the Council, the project includes the expansion of Twin Palm Road from a single carriageway to a dual carriageway, a development expected to significantly ease congestion on one of Lusaka’s busiest roads.
The stretch under construction runs from the Lake Road Junction to Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Twin Palm and is scheduled for completion in September 2026.
The Council said the project is intended to improve accessibility and facilitate the efficient movement of people, goods and services within the capital city.
Major roads under rehabilitation
The Twin Palm Road project forms part of a wider infrastructure programme covering 40.1 kilometres of roads across Lusaka.
Among the other major projects is the expansion of Great East Road from four lanes to six lanes in selected sections to accommodate increasing traffic volumes.
The rehabilitation programme also includes works on:
- Acacia Road
- Ibex Road
- Main Street
- Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Road
- Independence Avenue
- Kamanga–Kapiliomba Road
The Council said the works involve road widening, construction of new pavement layers, drainage improvements and the installation of road signs to enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians.
Reducing congestion
LCC said the rehabilitation programme forms part of its broader strategy to reduce traffic congestion, shorten travel times and improve the condition of roads across the city.
The Council noted that upgrading key roads is expected to support economic activity by improving connectivity between residential, commercial and industrial areas.
Motorists urged to cooperate
Meanwhile, the Council has appealed to motorists and members of the public to exercise patience during the construction period and comply with temporary traffic diversions put in place to facilitate the works.
It said its Department of Engineering and Infrastructure Development remains committed to ensuring that all projects are completed to the required quality standards and within the scheduled timeframes.
“The Lusaka City Council remains dedicated to upgrading road infrastructure across the city to support economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents,” the Council said in a statement issued by Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba.
The road rehabilitation programme is one of several infrastructure projects currently underway in Lusaka as authorities seek to improve the city’s transport network in response to increasing traffic volumes and rapid urbanisation.
