Turkey–Israel Tensions Escalate in Syria

Turkey is reportedly deploying large quantities of weapons into Syria under the cover of darkness, with the shipments allegedly coordinated by Turkey’s intelligence agency, MIT. The move comes in response to Tuesday’s Israeli airstrikes on Turkish assets at Abu al-Duhur Airbase in Idlib province.

According to reports, Ankara is preparing to retaliate against Israeli targets in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon in response to the strikes. Washington has reportedly informed Israel that Turkey is expected to respond.

The Israeli strikes reportedly targeted a base where Turkish equipment had been used to rehabilitate the runway, shortly after a Turkish military delegation visited the site. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that Israel will not tolerate an expanded Turkish military presence near its borders.

Analysts warn that Syria could increasingly become the front line of a Turkish-Israeli confrontation. Ankara seeks to strengthen and rebuild Syria’s military capabilities, while Israel wants to prevent Syria from emerging as a significant military threat.

Turkey says it has the right to defend its forces and interests, while Israel maintains that its actions are necessary for national security.

With tensions rising, Syria risks becoming the arena for a wider regional confrontation between two powerful NATO states, with potentially serious consequences for the Middle East.
