Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) make it easy to withdraw cash, check account balances and carry out other banking transactions at any time of the day. However, one small mistake at an ATM can expose your bank account to fraud, theft or unexpected financial losses.

Criminals are constantly developing new ways to steal card information and PIN numbers, making it important for everyone to use ATMs carefully.

Here are some of the biggest ATM mistakes that could cost you money and how you can avoid them.

One of the most common mistakes is using an ATM in an isolated or poorly lit area. While it may seem convenient, secluded ATMs make it easier for criminals to target unsuspecting users. Whenever possible, use ATMs located inside banks, shopping malls or busy public places where there are security cameras and other people around.

Another costly mistake is failing to inspect the ATM before inserting your card. Criminals sometimes install fake card readers, known as skimmers, over the real card slot to steal card details. Tiny hidden cameras or fake keypads may also be placed on the machine to capture your PIN. If the card slot looks loose, damaged or unusual, do not use the ATM and report it to the bank immediately.

Many people also forget to cover the keypad when entering their PIN. Even if no one appears to be watching, hidden cameras or people standing nearby may be able to see your PIN. Always shield the keypad with your hand while typing your PIN.

Leaving your ATM receipt behind is another mistake that can expose personal information. Receipts may contain account details or transaction information that fraudsters can misuse. Always take your receipt with you or dispose of it securely.

Some people make the mistake of accepting help from strangers while using an ATM. A person pretending to assist you may distract you while another steals your cash or card. If you experience problems with an ATM, contact your bank directly instead of relying on strangers.

Using easy-to-guess PINs such as birthdays, anniversaries or repeated numbers like 1111 or 1234 also increases your risk. Choose a unique PIN that is difficult for others to guess and never share it with anyone.

Another dangerous habit is counting your cash at the ATM. Once your money is dispensed, place it safely in your wallet or bag before moving away from the machine. Counting cash in public can attract thieves.

People should also avoid saving their PIN on their phone or writing it on their ATM card. If your wallet or phone is stolen, criminals could easily gain access to your account.

Ignoring bank transaction alerts can also prove costly. Most banks offer SMS or mobile app notifications whenever money is withdrawn or transferred. These alerts allow you to detect suspicious transactions quickly and report them before more money is lost.

Another mistake is walking away before the transaction is complete. Always wait until the ATM returns your card and displays the final confirmation screen. Many people have accidentally left their cards behind because they rushed away after receiving cash.

Using ATMs late at night while distracted by your phone can also increase your chances of becoming a victim of theft. Stay alert and remain aware of your surroundings throughout the transaction.

Finally, regularly check your bank statements and mobile banking history. If you notice withdrawals or transactions you did not authorise, report them to your bank immediately. Acting quickly may help prevent further losses.

Modern ATMs are generally safe, but your personal security habits play a major role in protecting your money. Taking a few extra seconds to inspect the machine, protect your PIN and stay alert can help you avoid becoming a victim of fraud or theft.
