SOLWEZI – A 25-year-old man has died after being shot during a heated argument in Kandemba Compound in Solwezi, with one suspect now receiving treatment under police guard after being assaulted by members of the public.
The deceased has been identified as Sarkodie Chibuye, while police have identified the suspect in custody as Kayombo. A second suspect is still on the run.
Argument Turns Deadly
According to Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the fatal shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon at around 3:30 pm at Chibuye’s residence in the Kimiteto area of Kandemba Compound.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Chibuye arrived home at approximately 3:00 pm accompanied by two men.
Shortly after their arrival, neighbours reportedly heard a heated argument followed by a gunshot.
Residents rushed to the scene and found Chibuye lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the upper chest.
He was rushed to Solwezi General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Suspects Attempted to Escape
Police said the two suspects fled immediately after the shooting.
However, members of the public pursued them and managed to apprehend one of the suspects, later identified as Kayombo.
During the arrest, the suspect was severely assaulted by the crowd before police officers intervened.
A Taurus pistol loaded with ammunition was allegedly recovered from Kayombo and handed over to the police as evidence.
Brother Reported the Incident
The shooting was reported to Kyawama Police Station at around 3:50 pm by William Chibuye, aged 30, who identified the victim as his younger brother.
Police confirmed that Kayombo is currently admitted to Solwezi General Hospital under armed police guard due to the injuries he sustained during the mob attack.
He is expected to face a murder charge once doctors certify him fit to leave hospital and investigations are completed.
Second Suspect Still Being Hunted
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the second suspect, who remains at large.
Investigators are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the motive behind the deadly confrontation.
The body of Sarkodie Chibuye has been taken to the Solwezi General Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
Police Appeal for Information
The Zambia Police Service has appealed to members of the public who may have information regarding the whereabouts of the second suspect to report to Kyawama Police Station or any nearest police station.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations into the fatal shooting are ongoing and that further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
