🇿🇲 VOTE BRIEF | Showdown at Mulungushi as Tonse’s Tonga Declares Election ‘Cancelled’, Security Moves Acts

Tensions erupted at the National Totalling Centre at Mulungushi International Conference Centre after Tonse Alliance official Enock Tonga challenged the presidential results process and declared Thursday’s election “cancelled.”

Videos circulating online show Tonga confronting the process from the podium and demanding a halt to the announcement of results. Security personnel then move towards him, surround him and forcibly remove him from the area. Reports say he was subsequently detained, although police have not announced charges or formally clarified his status.

The confrontation marks another escalation in the battle between the opposition alliance and the Electoral Commission of Zambia over the presidential tally. Tonse representatives have demanded reconciliation of disputed figures against original Gen-20 forms, while ECZ has continued announcing constituency results.

Tonga’s declaration, however, does not cancel the election. Political parties and their representatives have no authority to unilaterally terminate a national election or invalidate votes already cast. Electoral disputes must move through procedures provided under Zambian electoral law.

His intervention follows NRPUP running mate Makebi Zulu’s demand for ECZ to stop announcing presidential results and conduct a polling-station-by-polling-station reconciliation. The opposition has alleged discrepancies, missing electoral records and interference with the process. Those allegations remain contested and require documentary verification.

The confrontation now places even greater pressure on ECZ to demonstrate how every disputed figure moves from the polling station to the national tally. It also places responsibility on Tonse to produce the Gen-20 records underpinning its objections.

The contest has moved beyond competing numbers. It is becoming a battle over confidence in the count itself.

At such a volatile stage, documentary evidence matters more than declarations from podiums.
