RPP Calls on Brian Mundubile to Condemn Binwell Mpundu’s Alleged “Kill and Be Killed” Remarks

The Republican Progressive Party (RPP) has called on Tonse Alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile to publicly condemn or distance himself from remarks attributed to Tonse Alliance presidential affairs chairman Binwell Mpundu, which the party says could promote violence.

In a media statement issued on August 24, 2026, RPP president Leslie Chikuse said the party was concerned that Mundubile and the Tonse Alliance leadership had not clearly condemned the remarks attributed to Mpundu.

According to the RPP, Mpundu was quoted as saying that the alliance was ready “to kill and to be killed.” The party said the remarks were initially dismissed by Mundubile as being AI-generated.

However, Chikuse said the situation changed after Mpundu subsequently acknowledged that the statement was genuine.

The RPP said it had expected the Tonse Alliance leadership to immediately distance itself from and condemn the remarks following that acknowledgement.

“We find it deeply troubling that Mundubile has not publicly condemned or distanced himself from the statement,” Chikuse said.

The party argued that political leaders who have contested national elections have a responsibility to promote peace, unity and order, regardless of political differences.

Chikuse warned that statements perceived to promote violence could create fear, uncertainty and tension among citizens, particularly during a sensitive period following a general election.

The RPP said political leaders must recognise the influence of their public statements and avoid rhetoric that could deepen political divisions or undermine Zambia’s peace.

The party has therefore called on Mundubile and the Tonse Alliance leadership to urgently address the matter by either condemning the remarks, distancing themselves from them, or calling on Mpundu to withdraw the statement and apologise.

The RPP also acknowledged that law enforcement agencies could independently examine the remarks and determine whether they amount to any criminal intent or offence.

However, Chikuse said the party’s primary concern was political leadership and responsibility rather than the potential criminal investigation.

The statement comes after Zambia went through an intense electoral period, with the RPP saying the country now needs healing, reconciliation and unity.

According to Chikuse, national healing could be undermined if statements perceived to promote violence remain unaddressed in the public domain.

The RPP has further urged political leaders across the country to exercise restraint and avoid making statements out of anger, emotion or political expediency.

The party stressed that political interests should not be placed above the peace and unity of Zambia.
