PROPHET ISAIAH SOVI CALLS FOR TERM LIMIT TO BE EXTENDED TO 10 YEARS IN ZAMBIA
Zambia’s most feared prophet Isaiah Brian Sovi has congratulated President Hakainde Hichilema following his declaration as the winner of the 2026 presidential election, describing the new mandate as an opportunity for Zambia to hold a serious national conversation about the future of democracy and development.
Sovi has proposed that Zambia consider constitutional reforms to extend the presidential term to 10 years, subject to strong constitutional checks and balances.
He argues that a longer mandate could provide greater continuity, reduce the resources spent on frequent elections, support long-term development planning, strengthen investor confidence, ensure policy consistency and give governments more time to complete major national projects.
According to Sovi, a 10-year mandate could also allow leaders to focus more on governing than campaigning and make difficult decisions whose benefits may only be realised over several years
However, he stressed that any such reform must preserve accountability and democratic safeguards, warning that a longer term should never become a licence for dictatorship or indefinite rule.
“Countries are not transformed through elections alone. They are transformed through vision, continuity, discipline, leadership and time,” Sovi said.
He further urged President Hichilema to use his second mandate to focus on energy, agriculture, job creation, industrialisation, infrastructure, mining, education and economic growth.
Sovi concluded by congratulating the President and expressing hope that the next chapter would go beyond politics and focus on building a Zambia that future generations can be proud of.
