President Hakainde Hichilema has described former Vice-President Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott as a selfless statesman who consistently placed Zambia’s national interest above personal ambition.

Speaking during the State Funeral Service for Dr. Scott in Lusaka, President Hichilema said the late former Vice-President’s legacy should inspire both present and future generations of leaders.

The President said Zambia had lost a distinguished leader whose unwavering commitment to constitutionalism, peace and public service contributed significantly to the country’s democratic development.

He noted that despite having opportunities to live and work abroad because of his academic achievements and intellectual ability, Dr. Scott chose to make Zambia his home and dedicated his life to serving its people.

President Hichilema said Dr. Scott served the country with distinction in several capacities, including as a public servant, Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister and Vice-President.

The Head of State also paid tribute to Dr. Scott’s leadership following the death of President Michael Sata in 2014, describing it as one of the most challenging periods in Zambia’s democratic history.

He said the country faced political uncertainty and intense succession debates, but Dr. Scott remained committed to upholding the Constitution, preserving national stability and ensuring a peaceful transition of power.

President Hichilema extended his condolences to Dr. Scott’s widow, Mrs. Charlotte Scott, and the bereaved family, saying the nation joins them in mourning a patriot whose life was defined by service, courage and an enduring commitment to Zambia.
