Africa GreenCo, private power trading firm, which in May 2025 secured a 13-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the 100MW Chisamba Solar PV Project, the largest grid-connected solar development in Zambia’s history and the largest in sub-Saharan Africa outside South Africa, has defended its position following a recent official report of powering exports from Zambia.

 An official report seen by the Zambian Business Times (ZBT) revealed that Africa GreenCo’s annual power exports from Zambia surged by over 100% in 2025, reaching nearly 13GWh. This surge occurred during a period marked by severe load-shedding, driven by drought-induced low water levels that significantly reduced hydroelectric generation.

In contrast, Zambia’s state-owned utility, ZESCO, even experienced an 18% decline in its own power exports during the same period, as the sector grappled with the impacts of the energy crisis. When contacted by the Zambian Business Times (ZBT) for comment, Ana Hajduka, Founder and CEO of Africa GreenCo, clarified that during the period in question, the company imported more power into Zambia than it exported.

 “In 2025, we exported about 13 GWh, which translates to a steady flow of only about 1.5 MW throughout the year, less than 0.1% of Zambia’s total power generation,” Hajduka explained.

“In contrast, we imported approximately 260 GWh into Zambia, averaging around 30 MW, which is roughly 18 times greater than our exports. This was done to help stabilize domestic supply during the drought.” She, however, questioned the ERB on why the report highlights exports but omits what she claimed much larger import figures. “We will follow up with ERB on why GreenCo’s import volumes were not included.”

Hajduka further added that, “Our Chisamba plant, the largest solar facility on the ZESCO grid, contributed about 114 GWh to the Zambian system last year, averaging around 13 MW, nearly 9 times our total exports. So, in 2025, our contribution to Zambia’s power supply was overwhelmingly positive, over 43 MW supplied (30 MW imports plus 13 MW from Chisamba) versus just 1.5 MW exported.”

Meanwhile, when asked by ZBT about the 2026 imports and exports, Hajduka noted that in the first half of this year, GreenCo exported about 5 GWh, or a steady flow of roughly 1 MW, “an even smaller fraction of the national power sector and a continued decline from previous years. Exports were higher in 2024, dropped in 2025, and have fallen further in 2026.”

“During the same period, GreenCo imported about 250 GWh into Zambia, averaging nearly 60 MW, far exceeding the company’s exports. The Chisamba plant also injected close to 100 GWh into the grid in H1 2026, averaging around 20 MW, which is about 20 times the export volume.”
