The Zambia Police Service has launched investigations into a motorist who allegedly defied a lawful order to stop and sped off during the movement of President Hakainde Hichilema’s motorcade in Lusaka.

The incident happened at the T-junction of Chilimbulu and Mosi-oa-Tunya Roads as the Presidential motorcade was passing through the area on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi says the motorist ignored an instruction to stop issued by a traffic police officer and instead sped off.

Chilabi says the Police Service has taken a keen interest in the matter and investigations have since been instituted.

The incident is the only security-related matter highlighted by Police following the Presidential inauguration ceremony held at National Heroes Stadium.

Meanwhile, Police say the inauguration was conducted peacefully and without any major security incidents.

No crime-related incidents were recorded at the stadium, while road traffic operations also proceeded successfully without any reported road traffic accidents.

Police attribute the smooth conduct of the event to the security and traffic management plans put in place, coupled with effective coordination among the Defence and Security Wings.

Traffic flow along the Great North Road and Lumumba Road leading to the venue returned to normal around 18:00 hours after temporary road closures and diversions.

The Police Service has commended members of the public and motorists for their patience, cooperation and compliance with security and traffic measures before, during and after the inauguration.
