262 ViewsLUSAKA — Police have this evening reportedly moved to the residence of NRP-UP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, where his supporters have camped in what they describe as an effort to protect him amid growing tensions ahead of Thursday’s elections.
An eyewitness at the residence has told the Zambian Eye that police officers arrived at the property and ordered supporters gathered there to leave.
The development comes amid growing concern within the opposition camp over what the NRP-UP says are alleged abductions and arrests targeting people close to the presidential candidate.
According to the NRP-UP, more than 40 members of Mundubile’s campaign team have so far been arrested, which the alliance alleges is part of an attempt to disrupt its preparations for the election.
The government, however, has accused elements within the opposition of planning to destabilise the electoral process, a claim the NRP-UP has rejected.
The latest development has heightened tensions at a time when political parties are making final preparations for the August 13 presidential election.
The situation at Mundubile’s residence remains tense as supporters continue to gather around the property.
The Zambian Eye is working to independently verify the reported police operation, the alleged arrests and reports of abductions.
