OPPOSITION DIVISIONS LEAVE UPND WITHOUT A CREDIBLE CHALLENGER – PASTOR CHANDA
By: Thomas Mwale
National Congress Party (NCP) leader Pastor Peter Chanda says the opposition has failed to emerge as a credible alternative to the ruling UPND due to persistent divisions and leadership wrangles among opposition political parties.
Speaking on the Political Podcast, Pastor Chanda said opposition leaders spent too much time contesting who should lead alliances and serve as the special purpose vehicle following the death of the Sixth Republican President, a situation he said undermined efforts to build a united front.
He noted that disagreements among opposition leaders resulted in fragmentation, weakening the opposition’s ability to effectively challenge the UPND ahead of the 2026 General Elections.
Pastor Chanda disclosed that the expulsion of the Patriotic Front from the Tonse Alliance complicated opposition unity efforts, despite earlier acknowledgement by alliance members that the former ruling party remained a significant stakeholder in opposition politics.
Pastor Chanda observed that the opposition currently lacks the organisation and preparedness needed to compete effectively with the UPND, which he described as more structured and better positioned for the upcoming elections.
