THE Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has warned employers against forcing workers to choose between their jobs and voting in tomorrow’s General Elections.

ZCTU President Blake Mulala said Thursday 13th August must be respected as a public holiday and workers must be given an unhindered opportunity to vote.

Mulala said workers are citizens first and must not be victimized for participating in the democratic process.

“The declaration of 13th August 2026 as a public holiday must be respected by every employer. Workers are citizens first, and they have an equal right to participate in choosing the leadership of this country. No employer should stand between a worker and the ballot box,” he stated.

He specifically urged private sector employers not to compel workers to report for normal duties where it would interfere with voting.

For sectors where workers must be on duty, Mulala said employers must create practical arrangements to allow staff time to cast their ballot.

“We will not accept a situation where a worker is threatened with dismissal, loss of pay, disciplinary action or any form of victimisation simply because they want to exercise their democratic right. The labour movement will remain vigilant and will speak out against any employer who undermines workers’ right to vote,” he warned.

Meanwhile, the union leader also called on Government and relevant authorities to ensure the public holiday is respected and workers are protected from intimidation.

He further urged all eligible workers to turn out and vote peacefully.

“The ballot belongs to every citizen, including the working people of Zambia. Let no worker be left behind because of work obligations. Every worker must have the opportunity to vote,” Mulala added.
