UPND Copperbelt Province chairman Elisha Matambo has warned that the party will no longer tolerate insults directed at President Hakainde Hichilema.

Matambo said President Hichilema had been subjected to enough abuse and that the time had come for such conduct to stop.

Speaking at a media briefing for UPND provincial chairpersons in Lusaka, Matambo said the party would not allow individuals to continue insulting the Head of State.

He recalled the difficulties President Hichilema faced while in opposition, particularly during his visits to the Copperbelt, where he claimed there were attempts on his life.

Matambo questioned how anyone could contemplate harming President Hichilema now that he is Head of State, saying he is protected by God.

“If they failed when he was in opposition, how will they manage now that he is Head of State?” Matambo said.

He said the President had endured considerable attacks during his years in opposition and called for an end to political hostility.

Meanwhile, UPND Lusaka Province chairman and newly elected Kafue East Member of Parliament Obvious Mwaliteta condemned remarks allegedly calling for the death of President Hichilema.

Mwaliteta said such sentiments were unacceptable and called on the police to seriously look into remarks allegedly made by exiled former lawmaker Emmanuel JJ Banda during a live Facebook broadcast.

He said political differences should not be allowed to degenerate into threats against the life of the President or any other citizen.

The provincial chairpersons said the period of politicking was now over and called on Zambians to return to normal life, unite and move forward as one nation.
