NIGER’S ARMY SEIZES HUGE ARSENAL AFTER AIR BASE MUTINY

Niger’s Defense and Security Forces have recovered a massive cache of weapons from Air Base 101 in Niamey. The seizure followed the suppression of a mutiny by soldiers from the Special Operations Command’s Special Reconnaissance Battalion.

The recovered arsenal includes 34 armed pickup trucks, heavy weapons, rocket launchers, hundreds of assault rifles, machine guns, ammunition, and communication equipment.

Officials said the weapons were stored in vehicles and bunkers spread across the base. The mutineers had amassed a significant military capability inside the capital.

The mutiny began on August 29 when soldiers broke military discipline, attempted to detain fellow soldiers, and opened fire on sensitive sites. Loyalist forces, reportedly backed by Russian Africa Corps personnel, regained control.

Niger’s national television said the mutineers did not just break military rules but used significant military means to threaten Niger and undermine the nation’s refoundation.

The mutiny was crushed. The arsenal is now in government hands.

What other hidden weapons caches are waiting to be discovered in the Sahel.
