Niger cut ties with Ukraine for one reason, the Sahel refuses to be a battlefield for other people’s wars

In August 2024, Niger severed all diplomatic relations with Ukraine, and it did so with immediate effect. It came just two days after Mali did exactly the same thing. Two Sahelian nations, moving as one, cutting off a European country thousands of miles from their borders. To understand why, you have to understand what Ukraine appeared to admit.

At the end of July 2024, there was heavy fighting in northern Mali, near Tinzaouaten on the Algerian border. Separatist rebels and al-Qaeda-linked militants ambushed a column of Malian soldiers and Africa Corps fighters, the Russian force formerly known as Wagner, and killed dozens of them. It was one of the heaviest defeats Mali’s side had suffered in years. Then a spokesman for Ukraine’s military intelligence, Andriy Yusov, went on the record and said the rebels had received the information they needed to carry out the attack. A separate Ukrainian official went further and appeared to link Kyiv directly to the operation

Sit with what that meant. A European nation, locked in its own war with Russia, was now reaching all the way into the Sahel and appearing to boast about helping arm an attack on African soil, in which African soldiers died. Mali called it a violation of its sovereignty and support for terrorism. Niger, in full solidarity, called the remarks unacceptable and cut Ukraine off completely.

This is the part that matters for every African watching. The great powers have always treated Africa as a chessboard, a place to fight their proxy wars, test their weapons and settle their scores using African bodies and African land. The Cold War was fought this way, in Angola, in the Congo, in Mozambique, with millions of Africans dying for a quarrel between Washington and Moscow that was never theirs. Now Russia and Ukraine are locked in a war of their own, and the temptation to drag Africa into it is exactly the same.

Niger and Mali looked at that and said no. Whatever you think of their Russian partnership, and it deserves honest scrutiny of its own, the principle they asserted here is one the whole continent should hold to. The Sahel is not a second front for someone else’s war. Africans have bled enough for conflicts imported from other continents. Niger’s message was blunt and it was correct. Do not bring your war here.

The great powers see Africa as a place to fight each other. The Sahel just reminded them it is a place where people live.
