A 25-year-old man wanted in connection with the alleged murder of an 11-year-old girl in Kaoma District has been arrested in Choma following a tip-off from members of the public.

Western Province commissioner of police Rae Hamoonga confirmed the development in a statement made available to ZANIS today.

Mr Hamoonga named the deceased as Choolwe Regina Munsanje and the suspect as Hestern Mweemba of Kanabilumbu Farming Area adding that the man was apprehended after weeks of evading arrest.

The suspect has been detained at Choma Police Station and is expected to be transferred to Kaoma to face the law.

Mr Hamoonga revealed that the case was first reported to Kaoma Police Station on March 18, 2026 as a missing person.

He said during initial investigations, police received information from community members alleging that the child had been subjected to repeated physical abuse by her brother-in-law, Mr Mweemba, who lived on the same farm.

Mr Hamoonga explained that the case took a significant turn on April 17, 2026 when Ms Munsanje and relatives reported to police that the child had allegedly been killed after being severely beaten by her husband and further indicated that she knew where the body had initially been concealed.

Police officers, accompanied by relatives, visited the indicated location in Kanabilumbu Farming Area the following day but to no avail.

Mr Hamoonga revealed that after intensive investigations and a manhunt, police tracked the suspect in Choma after a tip off from members of the public.

The Zambia Police Service has since commended members of the public for their cooperation and appealed to anyone with information that may assist in locating the remains of the deceased to report to the nearest police station.

He added that police in Western Province remain committed to ensuring that all those responsible for serious crimes are brought to justice.
