NRP-UP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has raised concern over reports of possible disturbances at various polling stations as the counting of ballots continues following Thursday’s general election.

In a statement issued in the early hours of Friday, Mundubile said his campaign was receiving reports from different polling stations and was investigating the situation.

“Fellow Zambians, we remain wide awake to reports from various polling stations that there could be some disturbances going on around the vote count,” Mundubile said.

He said his team would engage the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) over the reports and seek clarification on what was happening at the affected polling stations.

“We are actively looking into this and we shall, as it were, address these reports exhaustively with the ECZ,” he said.

Mundubile, who is challenging incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema on the NRP-UP ticket backed by the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance, did not specify the locations of the alleged disturbances or provide details of what had reportedly occurred.

He nevertheless urged his supporters to remain alert while awaiting further communication from the campaign.

“Meanwhile, we call upon all our supporters to be alert. We will address you at an opportune time,” he said.

The statement comes as counting continues across the country following the closure of polling stations at 18:00 on Thursday.

Under the electoral process, votes are first counted at individual polling stations before results are taken to constituency tally centres for consolidation. Presidential results will subsequently be transmitted to the national tallying process conducted by the ECZ.

Mundubile’s statement comes at a particularly sensitive stage of the election, with political parties closely monitoring results from polling stations and constituency tally centres.

The NRP-UP campaign has previously raised concerns about the conduct of the electoral process and has repeatedly called on its supporters and polling agents to protect the vote through lawful monitoring and verification.

The ECZ is expected to provide official updates as the national tallying process progresses.

For now, Mundubile has called on his supporters to remain vigilant while his campaign investigates the reports and engages the electoral authorities.
