National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity leader Brian Mundubile has declared that he won Zambia’s presidential election, while President Hakainde Hichilema says his side is seeing positive signs as the vote count continues and the country waits for the Electoral Commission of Zambia to release official results.

Addressing the nation in a televised clip on August 14, 2026, Mundubile said his party had put together its own tally using a Parallel Voter Tabulation system.

And according to him, the data came directly from polling stations and constituency totalling centres across the country and pointed to a win for NRPUP at both parliamentary and the presidential level.

He expressed dismay on what he called delays in making presidential results public and verifying them openly.

Mundubile argued that a slow process creates room for interference, and he urged the commission to publish the figures immediately as required by law.

He also asked that stakeholders be given access to the relevant records so they can check the outcome independently.

The NRPUP president listed a number of complaints his party says it has received from different areas. He alleged that in Mufulira, military personnel had taken over some totalling centres and that GEN 20 result forms were being taken away.

He referred to reports about ballot boxes in Chawama and Matero, and said any case where boxes were stolen, moved improperly, tampered with or taken outside the official procedures must be investigated quickly and openly.

Mundubile also claimed that in North-Western Province, returning and presiding officers had been told to stop releasing results and GEN 20 forms. From Northern Province he cited an allegation involving a senior government official and the movement of ballot boxes.

He called on ECZ to safeguard all ballot boxes, GEN 20 forms and other election materials, to keep the chain of custody intact, and to allow accredited party agents and observers to do their work. He further requested that results be published at both polling station and constituency level so that every announced figure can be matched against the original records.

On the other hand, President Hichilema, in a statement following Thursday’s vote, took a different tone.

He said his team is continuing to get encouraging reports as votes were counted, and highlighted what he described as peace, unity and solidarity across the country during the process.

Hichilema did not claim victory, but instead asked Zambians to stay calm while waiting for the official announcement from the body mandated to manage the election.

“We continue to receive encouraging results and reports of peace, unity and solidarity across our country as the votes come in.

“There is much in this moment to be grateful for.

“Let us remain peaceful, patient and patriotic as we await the official outcome from those entrusted with managing the vote,” he said.

Mundubile made a similar appeal to his own supporters. He urged party agents and citizens to remain peaceful and to work within the law, stressing that protecting the vote should not lead to violence or clashes with security forces.

With both camps saying the numbers coming to them look good, focus is now on ECZ as it continues to verify and announce results.

Mundubile insists that if there are differences between what is announced and what was recorded at polling stations, the records should be made public so they can be reconciled.

“The people of Zambia voted. Their decision must be respected,” he said.
