KAFUE, LUSAKA PROVINCE, July 16, 2026 – National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRP-UP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has alleged that the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has resources to persuade opposition candidates to withdraw from the August 13 General Election but lacks the funds to pay farmers for their produce.
Addressing a campaign rally in Kafue on Wednesday as part of his Lusaka Province tour, Mundubile claimed that some opposition candidates had been offered between K10 million and K15 million to pull out of the race.
“The UPND has money to buy out opposition candidates, but it has no money to pay farmers,” Mundubile told supporters.
He did not provide evidence to support the allegation, and the UPND had not responded to the claims by the time of publication.
The opposition leader questioned why the government had not announced the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) maize buying price and commenced purchases, saying farmers were waiting to be paid after investing heavily in this year’s crop.
The FRA has attributed the delay in commencing maize purchases to high moisture levels in the harvested grain, saying it must ensure only maize meeting the required storage standards is bought for the country’s strategic food reserves.
Mundubile said his administration would prioritise timely payments to farmers and invest in agricultural infrastructure, including maize drying facilities, to eliminate delays caused by high moisture content.
He reiterated his campaign promise to “reset” the country’s economy, arguing that Zambia needed a government that would restore normal operations in key sectors.
“We shall reset this country and make it operate normally again,” he said.
Turning to development, Mundubile said President Hakainde Hichilema should be campaigning on tangible achievements from his first term rather than making fresh promises.
“If you are seeking another term, you should be telling people what you have already delivered,” he said.
Mundubile also pledged to improve the quality of free education by addressing classroom congestion, increasing the supply of learning materials and ensuring that pupils receive free uniforms and textbooks.
He further promised to continue the Social Cash Transfer Programme if elected but said the programme would be administered fairly and without political bias.
“Our social protection programmes must benefit deserving citizens regardless of their political affiliation,” he said.
The NRP-UP leader concluded by urging Kafue residents to turn out in large numbers on polling day and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
“I appeal to the people of Kafue to wake up early, vote in numbers and protect your vote,” he said.
Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, are this week campaigning across Lusaka Province with rallies and roadshows scheduled in several constituencies before concluding the tour with a major rally in Matero on Friday.
