LATE FORMER PRESIDENT LEVY MWANAWASA’S ELDEST DAUGHTER MIRIAM AND LORNA MWANAWASA ENDORSE BRIAN MUNDUBILE FOR PRESIDENCY

Speech by Lorna and Miriam Mwanawasa

Good morning, fellow citizens of the Republic of Zambia.

We stand before you today not merely as daughters of our late Republican President, Dr. Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, but as patriotic Zambians who believe that our nation is greater than any political party, any government, or any individual.

Today, we speak not for ourselves, but for every Zambian who believes in justice, constitutionalism, democracy and national unity.

Our Founding President, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, gave this nation a motto that has stood the test of time:

“One Zambia, One Nation.”

That was not merely a slogan. It was a national covenant. It reminds us that every Zambian, regardless of tribe, province, language or political affiliation, belongs equally to this Republic. Dr. Kaunda also reminded us that “We are all God’s children,” calling us to love one another and place Zambia above our differences.

Our father, Dr. Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, demonstrated that the Rule of Law is the foundation of national development. He showed that fighting corruption, strengthening institutions and respecting the Constitution are not acts of political convenience—they are acts of patriotism.

Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu also reminded us that constitutional democracy is strengthened when power is exercised under the law and the rights of citizens are protected.

These principles belong to no political party.

They belong to Zambia.

Our Constitution teaches us that Zambia is a sovereign democratic Republic governed by the supremacy of the Constitution.

It teaches us that all persons are equal before the law.

It requires the separation of powers between the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary.

It demands an independent Judiciary that administers justice without fear, favour or prejudice.

It protects the fundamental rights and freedoms of every citizen.

These are not privileges granted by politicians.

They are constitutional guarantees belonging to every Zambian.

When institutions become weak, the people become vulnerable.

When justice becomes selective, confidence in democracy begins to disappear.

When citizens become afraid to speak, democracy itself begins to suffer.

Our appeal today is simple:

Let Parliament remain independent.

Let the Judiciary remain independent.

Let constitutional institutions remain independent.

Let law enforcement remain professional.

Let justice never depend on political affiliation, wealth, influence or status.

Justice delayed weakens confidence. Justice denied weakens democracy. Justice must be equal for all.

To our leaders:

Leadership is stewardship.

Power is temporary.

The Constitution is permanent.

Criticism is not the enemy of democracy. Accountability strengthens democracy.

To every Zambian:

Exercise your freedoms peacefully.

Reject violence.

Reject hatred.

Reject tribalism.

Reject political intolerance.

Let us disagree without becoming enemies.

Before we conclude, we also acknowledge President Hakainde Hichilema for continuing national development through investments in infrastructure, roads, education and other public services. Development belongs to the people of Zambia, and every administration has a duty to build upon the foundation laid by those before it. As we commend what benefits our nation, we must also continue to strengthen our democratic institutions, uphold the Rule of Law and safeguard our Constitution.

As Dr. Kaunda taught us:

“One Zambia, One Nation.”

As President Michael Sata reminded us:

“God has stopped making new countries.”

Therefore, let us protect the only Zambia God has given us.

As we approach the 13 August 2026 General Election, we believe constitutional reforms remain essential to strengthen democratic governance, safeguard judicial independence, reinforce checks and balances, and protect the rights and freedoms of every citizen.

A Constitution must never be written to benefit those who govern today. It must protect generations yet unborn.

After careful reflection, we have decided to endorse Mr. Brian Mundubile for President and Mr. Makebi Zulu for Vice President. We believe they have the capacity to strengthen constitutional governance, uphold the Rule of Law and serve all Zambians.

We leave you with this message:

The Constitution above politics.

The Rule of Law above personalities.

Justice above power.

Unity above division.

One Zambia. One Nation. One Future.

May God bless every citizen.

May God bless the Republic of Zambia.
