Newly elected United Party for National Development (UPND) Serenje Constituency MP Bishop Friday Katombi (PhD) says he is confident that the longstanding wildlife challenges will now be addressed under President Hakainde Hichilema’s new mandate.

In a media statement today after his courtesy call on the Permanent Secretary for Tourism, Evans Muhanga, Dr Katombi said he had discussed the way forward with him.

He noted that having previously worked for the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, it was imperative for him to appreciate what the government is doing to conserve wildlife.

Dr Katombi advanced that the long-awaited departmental structure is being worked on to help fully manage the wildlife sector.

He said that he was assured that the structure and other attached conditions would soon be completed.

Dr Katombi affirmed that the Permanent Secretary has the department at heart and that his vision aligns with that of the President.

He emphasised that with the re-election of the President, the department will finally receive the attention it has long deserved.

Dr Katombi further noted that it was pleasing to observe that major concerns of the department are being addressed through the Minister of Tourism.

He said that being a wildlife police officer by career, he stands together with the department to ensure their cries are actualised.

Dr Katombi added that he is grateful to the President and the Permanent Secretary for having a clear vision for the department.

He stated that the commercialisation of the department, to make it a viable and income-generating entity, is also being considered.

He further said that it would be a great honour to see the concerns of wildlife police officers addressed and completed during his tenure.
