THE TRIBULATIONS OF BM8 AND HIS FAMILY

It’s not surprising that Brian Mundubile, his family and colleagues are being terrorized by Hakainde Hichilema. The latter has simply offloaded, in a classic revenge fashion, what Edgar Lungu did to him.

Remember those images of Mrs. Hichilema in tears when this same security forces he has now turned onto his main political rival was doing what it always does best?

Mrs. Hichilema’s tears and trauma were real but dismissed casually by those who stood to benefit from her family’s travails.

Similarly, Mrs. Mundubile’s travails and those of her family are real. Hichilema’s children, innocent souls in the matter, suffered needlessly and so are Mundubile’s children.

Hichilema and his supporters are having a hearty laughter at the pain inflicted on an innocent political opponent forgetting that just five years ago, this was his plight.

He is forgetting that it was precisely to usher in a New Dawn that the Zambian people elected him. Hichilema is forgetting that vengeance and revenge are enemies of progress. They hold back the clock of change.

Hichilema doesn’t have the moral courage to be that leader that turns the Robben Island experience and its bitterness into a moral force for a new nation.

When the founding father of this nation was almost killed by a bullet shot by our own security forces, instead of remorse, the man who had declared Zambia a Christian nation, Frederick Chiluba taunted the old man, “don’t play cha cha cha with the police. Those guns they carry are real”!

Why do some of these men we elect to the position of power so calous and utterly disrespectful of the lives of those who stand as their opponents?

And why do their supporters stand with them in this shameful act of celebrating pain?

Ordinarily, families that have been victims of political persecution should be standing together in solidarity supporting each other.

Mrs Hichilema and her children should be standing with Mrs. Mundubile and her children in solidarity. They never chose this path. The men in their respective lives did.

But, alas, it’s show time in the Hichilema home! It’s time to grab a huge plate or cup of popcorn and watch Mundubile’s twin-daughters emotionally traumatized as the innocence of their youth struggles to make sense of what even we adults cannot decipher!

And most telling, today, the Hichilema’s will be in church singing out their lungs, “I surrender all, I surrender all. All to Jesus,  I surrender all”! And these voices must be received as sweet melody in the courts of justice above?

It was painful to watch hypocrisy on full display when Chiluba’s cruelty towards Kaunda flew in the face of his claims to the Christian faith and his declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation.

It was equally painful to watch ECL set a national day of prayer, forgiveness and reconciliation when his treatment of Hichilema was contrary to the spirit of his action.

Similarly, it’s painful to watch an elder of a Christian church, and a master guide conduct national affairs that hardly distinguish him from drug cartel leaders in Latin America who will stop at nothing to eliminate competition.

Cry, my beloved country as the tide of evil continues shutting down every hope we had at turning a new page in our democratic experiment.
