MWANDI Independent candidate Iris Kaingu is facing a High Court petition seeking to nullify her election as member of parliament for Mwandi Constituency.

Losing United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate Sibeso Sefulo filed the petition, alleging bribery, corruption and undue influence of voters by Kaingu’s election agents with her “full knowledge, consent and approval.”

Sefulo also alleged the Electoral Commission of Zambia failed to comply with the Electoral Act. She said presiding officers did not properly supervise counting and announcement of results according to procedures.

She further claimed elections at most polling stations violated principles of secrecy and the right to vote. Sefulo alleged presiding officers cast votes on behalf of elderly voters contrary to their wishes.

Sefulo asked the court to nullify Kaingu’s election and order a fresh election.
