356 ViewsMONZE, July 2, 2026 – Information reaching Zambian Eye indicates that Independent parliamentary candidate for Gwembe Constituency, Brian Ntundu, has been arrested and is being detained in Monze.
Details surrounding the arrest remain unclear, with police yet to issue an official statement outlining the circumstances of the detention or the offence for which the former lawmaker has allegedly been arrested.
Ntundu is a former Member of Parliament for Gwembe, having represented the constituency under the UPND for three consecutive terms before leaving the ruling party.
He is now contesting the August 13 General Election as an Independent candidate after failing to secure the UPND adoption.
His candidature has attracted political attention because he is the only candidate challenging the UPND’s Tyson Simuzingili in the Gwembe parliamentary race. Opposition political parties did not field a candidate in the constituency, making the contest a straight race between the ruling party and an Independent candidate.
The situation mirrors several constituencies in Southern, Western and North-Western provinces, where the UPND is facing Independent candidates after opposition parties did not field contestants.
Sources told Zambian Eye that Ntundu is being held in Monze, although the exact charge has not yet been made public.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the Zambia Police Service were unsuccessful by the time of publication, and no official statement had been issued regarding the reported arrest.
Zambian Eye will continue to monitor the matter and provide updates as soon as the police or other relevant authorities release further information.
