14 arrested after taxi drivers clash at Savage Yard in Kitwe

FOURTEEN people have been arrested following a clash between two groups of taxi drivers at Savage Yard Bus Station in Kitwe’s Central Business District. Copperbelt Police Commissioner Rae Hamoonga said the incident occurred around 11:30 hours after a faction of taxi drivers went to the station intending to take over management of the bus station.

FOURTEEN people have been arrested following a clash between two groups of taxi drivers at Savage Yard Bus Station in Kitwe’s Central Business District.

Copperbelt Police Commissioner Rae Hamoonga said the incident occurred around 11:30 hours after a faction of taxi drivers went to the station intending to take over management of the bus station.

Mr. Hamoonga said the move agitated other drivers at the station, leading to the two groups clashing and engaging in riotous behaviour. Police officers responded swiftly and brought the situation under control.

The 14 suspects have since been detained pending further investigations and possible legal action.

“The Zambia Police Service in Copperbelt is calling on all members of the public, particularly residents of Kitwe, to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding,” Mr. Hamoonga said.

He warned against taking the law into one’s own hands and urged community leaders and transport operators to promote peace and dialogue.
