HYBRID WAR IS ALREADY UNDERWAY ON NATO’S EASTERN BORDER

Latvia has confirmed deliberate sabotage against the new surveillance system being constructed along its borders with Russia and Belarus. Cables were cut, distribution cabinets were sabotaged and equipment connected to video-surveillance posts was damaged.

This is precisely the type of hybrid attack NATO’s eastern members have been warning about for weeks: no tanks crossing the border and no formal declaration of war—just carefully targeted acts intended to weaken security, disrupt communications and test how quickly an alliance member responds.

Latvian Border Guard chief General Guntis Pujāts said the damage was not random vandalism. The equipment was deliberately targeted to obstruct construction and delay the activation of Latvia’s new “smart border” system.

Latvian authorities have not publicly identified the individual perpetrators, but the Border Guard placed the sabotage within a pattern of increasingly aggressive methods supported by the regimes in neighboring countries.

The hybrid war has already started. It is being fought through damaged cables, disabled surveillance equipment, weaponized migration, electronic interference and repeated pressure against NATO’s borders. What officials warned could happen is now happening—and each incident tests whether Europe recognizes the attack before something more dangerous follows.
