LUSAKA, July 15, 2026 – Zambia is mourning the death of former Republican Vice President and former Acting President Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott, who has died at the age of 82.

Dr. Scott, one of Zambia’s most distinguished politicians and economists, passed away on Wednesday. His death marks the end of a remarkable political career that spanned more than three decades and saw him make history as the first white Vice President of Zambia and the only white person to serve as Acting President since the country’s independence in 1964.

Born on June 1, 1944, in Livingstone, Dr. Scott was the son of Scottish immigrants who settled in Northern Rhodesia before Zambia attained independence.

An economist by profession, he studied at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge, before obtaining a doctorate in cognitive science from the University of Sussex. Before entering frontline politics, he lectured at the University of Zambia and was actively involved in agriculture.

Dr. Scott entered politics in the early 1990s and was elected Member of Parliament for Lusaka Central under the Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD). During President Frederick Chiluba’s administration, he served as Minister of Agriculture, where he championed reforms in the agricultural sector.

He later joined Michael Sata in forming the Patriotic Front (PF), becoming one of the party’s founding members and one of Sata’s closest political allies.

Following the PF’s victory in the 2011 General Election, Dr. Scott was appointed Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, serving from September 2011 until President Michael Sata’s death in October 2014.

Following President Sata’s passing, Dr. Scott assumed the role of Acting President in accordance with the Constitution, becoming the first white person to lead an independent African nation in the modern democratic era, albeit in an acting capacity.

His tenure as Acting President lasted until January 2015, when Edgar Lungu was elected Zambia’s sixth Republican President in a presidential by-election.

Although the Constitution in force at the time prevented him from contesting the presidency because his parents were not Zambian by birth or descent, Dr. Scott remained an influential figure within the Patriotic Front and continued participating in national political discourse after leaving office.

Known for his outspoken nature, sharp intellect and candid views on governance and public policy, Dr. Scott remained active in political debates and frequently commented on Zambia’s economic and democratic development.

Tributes are expected to pour in from across the political divide, with many expected to remember him as a politician who transcended racial barriers and played a significant role in Zambia’s democratic evolution.

Government is yet to announce funeral arrangements and the official national mourning programme.

Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott is survived by his family and leaves behind a legacy that will remain etched in Zambia’s political history as one of the country’s most unique and influential leaders.
