EXPLOSIONS ROCK BULGARIAN AMMUNITION PLANT — ACCIDENT SUSPECTED, BUT THE FACILITY’S HISTORY WILL RAISE QUESTIONS

 A fire followed by multiple explosions erupted at the EMKO ammunition plant near Belitsa, Bulgaria, after a truck reportedly caught fire inside the facility.

The blaze spread into part of the ammunition storage area, triggering secondary detonations. Workers were evacuated, the surrounding area was cordoned off, and local residents were warned about smoke and the continuing danger from explosive materials.

So far, no deaths or injuries have been reported.

Bulgarian authorities currently believe the incident most likely began as an internal industrial accident rather than an outside attack, although the investigation is still ongoing.

And there is an important reason this particular explosion is going to receive more attention than an ordinary factory fire.

The plant belongs to Bulgarian arms businessman Emilian Gebrev, whose name has appeared repeatedly in investigations involving suspected Russian intelligence activity.

Gebrev survived a poisoning attempt in 2015 that Bulgarian and international investigators linked to operatives associated with Russia’s GRU, while facilities connected to his defense businesses have also suffered previous unexplained fires and explosions.
