Renowned Zambian engineer Bernard Chiwala has outlined twelve strategic imperatives key to turning round Zambia’s economy within ten years.

Engineer Chiwala added that the strategies will set the country on a path to full industrialisation within twenty-five years.

He observed that Zambia must have a manufacturing-led economy to achieve sustainable growth.

Engineer Chiwala noted that agricultural mechanisation and value addition are critical to boosting the agricultural sector.

He advanced that an export-driven economy will help reduce the country’s trade deficit.

Engineer Chiwala said that a world-class education system with science, technology, engineering and innovation must play a pivotal role in nation building.

He affirmed that information and communication technology must be placed at the centre stage of the economy.

Engineer Chiwala emphasised that building world-class infrastructure led by local experts will create employment opportunities.

He added that strengthening institutions of governance is essential for anchoring national development on robust and efficient systems.

Engineer Chiwala noted that servant leadership must underpin the national development agenda.

He further stated that governance structures in both the private sector and government must be anchored on meritocracy and traceable superior track record.

Engineer Chiwala affirmed that cultural remodelling systems will raise citizens who are generational thinkers with an enduring love for their country.

He said that since November 2019 he has been a member of the team that has been promoting the commercial cultivation of avocados and avocado value addition.

He is also the current Board Chairman of the Lusaka Avocado Multipurpose Cooperative Society a member driven organization that is developing an Avocado plantation in Kawambwa.

It is worthy noting that under the Comprehensive Agriculture Transformation Support Program (CATSP) that the Ministry of Agriculture formulated, Avocados is one of the identified tree crops that is being promoted under CATSP.

Engineer Chiwala stated that as a result of the efforts by key players in the Avocado Sector, Zambia is now slowly but steadily being put on the Global Avocado Map.
