The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set aside vote tallying for Mandevu parliamentary Constituency and ordered a fresh polls 2 weeks after the general election.
The move follows a security breach that resulted in the destruction and disappearance of key election materials.
In a press release issued Thursday, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the Commission has resolved to conduct a new National Assembly election for Mandevu in Lusaka Province.
The decision follows an incident on August 13, during the tallying of results from the general elections. According to an official report from the Lusaka District Electoral Officer dated August 18, unknown individuals attacked the totalling centre in Mandevu.
The attackers destroyed result transmission equipment and made off with all election documentation. The damage left the returning officer unable to declare the parliamentary results for the constituency.
“In view of this, the Commission has resolved to hold a by-election for Mandevu Constituency on a date to be communicated in due course,” Kasaro stated.
The attack on the totalling centre is the most serious post-election incident reported so far from the August 13 polls.
Mandevu is one of Lusaka District’s key urban constituencies and was among the seats awaiting official declaration after voting day.
The ECZ said further details including the nomination and polling dates for the fresh election will be announced later.
