A consortium of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has called on the government to immediately commission an independent, impartial and transparent investigation into the death of former Lunte Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya.
In a joint statement, the organisations said the investigation should involve credible and neutral institutions, with the findings made public to ensure accountability and restore public confidence.
The CSOs have also called on the Zambia Police Service and the Central Joint Operations Committee to fully disclose the rules of engagement, chain of command and decision-making processes surrounding the Kabulonga operation.
They said authorities should reconcile what they described as inconsistencies in the accounts already presented to the public regarding the operation
The consortium has further urged the Director of Public Prosecutions and relevant oversight institutions to ensure that any criminal or disciplinary accountability arising from the investigation is pursued without fear or favour, regardless of the rank or office of anyone implicated.
The CSOs include Advocates for Democratic Governance Foundation, ActionAid Zambia, Alliance for Community Action, LCK Freedom Foundation, Caritas Zambia and Chapter One Foundation among others.
Meanwhile, Tonse Pamodzi Alliance Parliamentary Affairs Chairperson Stephen Kampyongo has called on the state to ensure the safety of the family, friends and colleagues of Mr Kafwaya, during the mourning period.
Speaking to Hot FM News, Mr. Kampyongo said there is need to ensure that Mr. Kafwaya is mourned with dignity and honour.
