LUSAKA – Zambia Police has effected changes in its provincial command structure following the immediate removal of Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi.
According to information confirmed on Friday, Mr Yuyi has been transferred to Police Service Headquarters in Lusaka for further deployment, ending his tenure as the officer in charge of one of the country’s busiest police commands.
He has been replaced by Muchinga Province Police Commanding Officer Kenneth Kang’ombe, who takes over the Copperbelt command with immediate effect.
The Zambia Police Service has not yet publicly disclosed the reasons behind the changes.
The transfer comes at a time when the Copperbelt remains one of the country’s key political battlegrounds ahead of the 13 August 2026 General Elections, with the province witnessing heightened political activity, including campaign rallies by both the ruling UPND and opposition parties.
In recent weeks, the province has also recorded several high-profile political incidents that required police intervention, including the disruption of campaign events and isolated cases of political violence.
Mr Kang’ombe now assumes responsibility for policing the province during the final weeks of the election campaign, a period expected to place increased demands on law enforcement to maintain public order and ensure peaceful political activities.
No immediate announcement has been made regarding Mr Kang’ombe’s replacement as Muchinga Province Police Commanding Officer.
