The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed Chisi Mbewe as Zambia Under-23 Men’s National Team Head Coach ahead of the Egypt 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

‎Announcing the appointment today, FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya said Mbewe, who is also head coach of Super League side Red Arrows, will lead an all-local technical bench.
‎
‎“The appointments have been made after a rigorous exercise that saw FAZ pick some of the best local coaching talents,” Chakatazya said.
‎
‎Mbewe will be assisted by Numba Mumamba as First Assistant, George Chilufya as Second Assistant, and Kalililo Kakonje as Goalkeeper Coach.
‎
‎The rest of the bench includes 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winning vice-captain Chintu Kampamba as Physical Trainer, Mumba Mwila as Team Manager, Dr. Ndaba Sipuke as Team Doctor, Nimrod Musongwa as Physiotherapist, Luka Kaunda as Video Analyst, Nchimunya Mwila as Security Manager, and 2009 CHAN Golden Boot winner Given Singuluma as Equipment Manager.

‎Chakatazya said Mbewe brings vast youth experience, having previously coached the U15 and U20 national teams.
‎
‎He was head coach of the U20 squad that qualified for the 2023 U20 AFCON in Egypt.
‎
‎“Mbewe has been part of the Zambian youth system for some time… and knows his way around the current generation of players,” Chakatazya said.
‎
‎“He will be assisted by an equally competent ensemble of local coaches that we have tasked to firstly qualify to the U23 AFCON and subsequently the Olympics in 2028.”
‎
‎Zambia has been handed a second-round tie against either Sierra Leone or Burkina Faso in the qualifiers for the 2027 U23 AFCON in Egypt.
‎
‎Mbewe’s charges will enter at the second round, with the first leg scheduled for 9 November 2026 and the return leg eight days later.
‎
‎The last time Zambia qualified for the U23 AFCON was in 2019 in Egypt under Beston Chambeshi, where the team exited in the first round.
‎
‎FAZ says the long-term target for the new bench is to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
