National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity presidential affairs chairperson Binwell Mpundu has admitted that a viral video in which he allegedly said he was ready to “die and kill for the August 13 polls” was authentic and not artificial intelligence generated.

Setting the record straight on his social media handle, Mpundu said his sentiments about being ready to kill were made in the context of self-defence.

Mpundu blames his media team for wrongly claiming that the video was AI-generated.

The incident comes just days before the general election on Thursday, August 13, 2026, amid calls for peaceful elections from various stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission of Zambia, the Church and civil society organisations.

In a notice posted on his Facebook page after the video was taken down, Mpundu (his media team) distanced himself from the video, saying he had not made it and that his account had been hacked.

His notice reads,“NOTICE
I’M NOT VERY ACTIVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND I HAVE BEEN MADE AWARE OF A VIDEO POSTED ON MY PAGE WHICH IS ALL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AS I HAVE NOT MADE ANY SUCH VIDEO. I HAVE NOT HAD ACCESS TO MY PAGE FOR DAYS NOW BECAUSE I WAS REMOVED BY A HACKER AND MY ADMINS ONLY POST WHAT I APPROVE .
KINDLY TAKE NOTE, APOLOGIES FOR THE SENTIMENTS CIRCULATED I’M THAT VIDEO.
THANK YOU….”

His explanation also attracted questions from some social media users, with some questioning how the alleged hacker was able to post the video and whether Mpundu has since regained access to his page.

Others have questioned the authenticity of his explanation, although there is currently no independent confirmation of who posted the video or whether it was AI-generated.

On Sunday, 9 August 2026, Democratic Advocates for Good Governance Executive Director Fabian Mutale reported Mpundu to authorities, saying the remarks were alarming and should be taken seriously by law enforcement.

Mutale said the video could cause fear and panic among members of the public ahead of Zambia’s 13 August general elections.

Police have since taken an interest in the matter and launched investigations.

Meanwhile, ruling United Party for National Development Secretary General Batuke Imenda has written to the Electoral Commission of Zambia seeking intervention over the matter.
