LUSAKA – Poor People’s Party (PPP) President Alex Mulyokela has laughed off false reports that circulated on social media on Thursday afternoon claiming that he had died.

The rumours quickly spread across several social media platforms, prompting concern among members of the public and political supporters before they were dismissed as false.

In a video recorded after the claims began circulating, Mulyokela confirmed that he is alive and in good health.

The opposition leader appeared in high spirits as he reacted to the rumours, laughing while assuring the public that reports of his death were completely untrue.

Mulyokela said he is currently in Lusaka, where he is busy organising a church event, and urged members of the public not to believe everything they see or read on social media.

The video has since been widely shared online, with many social media users expressing relief after seeing him personally dismiss the false claims.

The incident comes at a time when concerns over the spread of misinformation on digital platforms continue to grow.

On Friday, the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) also reminded broadcasters to verify information before publishing or broadcasting it after some media outlets reportedly aired false reports relating to Mulyokela’s alleged death.

The media regulator stressed that information obtained from social media should always be verified through credible sources before being broadcast, warning that the spread of false information can cause unnecessary distress to individuals, families and the public.

The latest incident has once again highlighted the dangers of misinformation and the importance of confirming facts before sharing or reporting sensitive information online.
