As artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart glasses continue gaining attention globally, an ICT expert has called for strict adherence to safety and quality standards before such devices become widely used by consumers.
Technology expert Ali Kingston Mwila told Zambian Business Times-ZBT in an exclusive interview that emerging technologies, including augmented reality (AR) and AI-enabled wearable devices, must undergo proper assessment to ensure they meet health, safety and security requirements before being introduced on the market.
He said regulatory systems play an important role in ensuring that technology products conform to both local and international standards.
“Any technology or product that is designed, made and put on the market goes through processes of meeting certain standards that involve health, safety and security,” he said.
The expert explained that institutions responsible for standards, such as the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS), help ensure products meet required specifications before being used by the public.
He said while some people have raised concerns that AI glasses could affect eyesight due to prolonged exposure, there is currently no conclusive medical evidence proving that the devices cause harm.
“Some people may think these AI glasses can affect the eyes or the body because of signals and electromagnetic waves, but as it stands, we do not have medical proof,” he said.
However, he noted that technology is developing at a faster pace than regulations, meaning standards must continue evolving to address possible risks associated with new innovations.
Mwila added that developed countries often revise or recall products when new research reveals potential safety concerns.
Meanwhile, he said AI glasses could offer new opportunities by allowing users to access information and interact with digital platforms without relying on handheld devices.
